General Information About All of Our Portfolio Calculators Our Portfolio Calculators use your risk questionnaire answers to design a portfolio individually tailored to your financial situation and risk profile. Each calculator recommends specific index funds, all of which can be purchased commission-free though Vanguard (see Why Vanguard). Your recommendation also includes a list of comparable Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) for those who prefer this investment vehicle. We require a portfolio size of at least $10,000 to use any of our Portfolio Calculators.

Standard Portfolio Calculator If you have between $10,000 and $50,000 to invest and all of your investments are in one type of account (taxable or tax-sheltered), this is probably the Portfolio Calculator for you. The Standard Calculator may also be the best choice if you are saving for a goal other than retirement or if you’d like to keep your portfolio as simple as possible. If you're not sure which calculator is best for you, go with this one.

Depending on the size of your portfolio and your responses to the risk questionnaire, the Standard Calculator will recommend a portfolio of two, three, or all four of the following funds (and their ETF equivalents):

Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund (US Stocks)
Vanguard FTSE All-World ex-US Index Fund (International Stocks)
Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund (Bonds)
Vanguard REIT Index Fund (Real Estate)

Advanced Portfolio Calculator If you can handle some complexity in your portfolio and you have at least $50,000 in one type of investment account (taxable or tax-sheltered), this is probably the Portfolio Calculator for you.

Depending on the size of your portfolio and your responses to the risk questionnaire, the Advanced Calculator will recommend a portfolio of as many as eight funds (and comparable ETFs). These funds include exposure to the following asset classes:

US Stocks (including Small Cap and Value)
International Stocks (including Small Cap and Value) from the following regions:
   Europe
   Pacific (Japan, Australia, and other countries in the Western Pacific)
   Emerging Markets
Bonds (including Treasury, Mortgage, Corporate, and Inflation-Protected)
Real Estate (REITs)

Advanced Portfolio Recommendation (Sample)

Premier Portfolio Calculator If you are an experienced investor with at least $50,000 in both taxable and tax-sheltered investment accounts, this is probably the Portfolio Calculator for you.

Depending on the size of your portfolio and your responses to the risk questionnaire, the Premier Calculator will recommend a portfolio of as many as nine funds (all of the funds and ETFs offered by the Advanced Calculator as well as potential exposure to Municipal Bonds). Additionally, this calculator specifies which funds to place in taxable accounts and which to place in tax-sheltered accounts in order to maximize your expected after-tax returns.
